Time offsets, refresh intervals and the way channels are matched to listings all affect whether your guide looks perfect or frustratingly wrong. How EPG data reaches your player

Guide data is separate from the video streams. It is usually delivered in a format called XMLTV, which lists channels and programmes with start and end times. Your player downloads this data and matches each programme to a channel using an identifier.

There are two common delivery routes:

1. Automatically with a login-based connection — the player requests guide data from the service along with channels.
2. Via a separate guide address — used with some playlist-based setups, where you add the guide link in the player's settings.

Setting 1: time zone

The player needs to know your time zone to display listings correctly. Check both the device's system time zone and any time zone setting inside the player.

Setting 2: guide offset

The offset shifts all guide times by a set number of hours or minutes. If every listing is consistently one hour early or late — common after daylight saving changes or when data is in another zone — adjust the offset until listings match what is on.

Tip: change the offset in small steps and check against a programme you know is on right now.

Setting 3: refresh interval

The refresh interval controls how often the player downloads new guide data. A daily refresh suits most viewers. More frequent refreshes can help with late schedule changes; less frequent refreshes reduce loading time on low-powered devices.

Setting 4: days of data

Some players let you choose how many days of guide data to store. More days mean more planning ability but also more storage and slower loading on streaming sticks. Two to three days is a practical balance for many devices.

Setting 5: channel matching

When a channel shows no listings, the player may not be matching it to guide data. Some players let you manually assign guide data to a channel. This is useful when a channel has been renamed or when a player misreads an identifier.

Setting 6: catch-up through the guide

Where the service provides catch-up on selected channels and the player supports it, you can often move back in the guide and select a past programme to play. Catch-up depends on both sides; if it does not work in one player, it may work in another.

Common EPG problems and fixes

A ten-minute EPG routine for a new device

Whenever you set up a new TV, stick or phone, run through this routine once:

1. Set the device's time zone in its system settings.
2. Add your service to the player and let channels load.
3. Wait for the first guide download before judging anything.
4. Check three programmes you know are on now, on different channels.
5. Adjust the offset if all three are shifted by the same amount.
6. Set the refresh interval to daily unless you have a reason to change it.
7. Hide unused categories to keep the guide fast.
8. Build favourites and switch to a favourites-only guide view if the player offers one.

On streaming sticks with limited memory, large guides can slow everything down. To speed things up:

• Hide categories you never watch.
• Reduce the number of days stored.
