How to Use IPTV Every Day: A Practical Guide for New Viewers
Setup is done — now what? This practical guide shows new viewers how to use IPTV comfortably every day, from the guide to favourites to catch-up.
By CatchON TV Team

Once your IPTV is set up, a new question appears: how do you actually use it comfortably every day? The answer is simpler than it looks. Most everyday viewing comes down to a handful of habits — using the guide, building favourites, switching channels quickly, finding things on demand and knowing what to do when something looks wrong. This guide shows how to use IPTV comfortably from day one.
This guide is for new viewers who have finished setup and want to feel at home. Menus and names vary between player apps, but the ideas are the same in almost all of them. If you have not set up yet, start with our IPTV setup overview.
The three main areas of a player
Most IPTV players are organised into three areas:
- Live TV — channels grouped into categories, plus the guide.
- Movies — on-demand films, if your service includes them.
- Series — on-demand shows organised by season and episode.
Some players also have a settings area, a search screen and a favourites section.
Using the guide
The electronic programme guide (EPG) shows what is on now and later.
- Open the guide from the live TV area — often with a dedicated button or menu option.
- Scroll down through channels and across through time.
- Select a programme that is on now to watch it; select a future one to see details or set a reminder.
If listings look an hour or more out, adjust the time zone or guide offset in settings — see our EPG settings guide.
Building favourites
Favourites turn a long channel list into your personal lineup.
- Highlight a channel you watch often.
- Use the option to add it to favourites — often a long press or a menu button.
- Repeat for your ten to twenty most-watched channels.
- Open the favourites list or favourites group from the live TV area.
On a TV, this single habit makes IPTV feel as quick as a cable remote.
Switching channels
- Use up and down on the remote while watching, if your player supports it.
- Use a "last channel" or "previous" button to jump back.
- Open the guide to jump to any channel.
- On touch devices, swipe or tap the channel list.
Using catch-up
Where your service offers catch-up on selected channels and your player supports it, you can watch programmes that already aired. In many players, you move back in the guide and select a past programme. Look for a small icon that marks catch-up availability. Catch-up is usually available only on some channels and for a limited period.
Watching on demand
- Open the Movies or Series area.
- Browse categories or use search.
- Select a title and press play.
- Pause and come back later — most players remember where you stopped.
Searching
Search is the quickest way to find an occasional channel, a film or a series. Type part of the name; many players search channels and on-demand titles together.
Parental controls
Many players let you lock categories or channels with a PIN. To set it up:
- Open settings and find parental controls.
- Create a PIN.
- Choose categories or channels to lock.
Combine this with device-level restrictions for shared family screens.
Making the player comfortable
Small adjustments make daily viewing more comfortable, especially for family members with different needs:
- Subtitles: where a stream includes subtitle tracks, turn them on from the playback menu. Availability depends on the channel or title.
- Audio language: some channels and titles include more than one audio track; switch in the playback menu.
- Text and layout: some players offer larger text or simplified layouts, useful for viewing from across the room.
- Channel numbers: if you are used to typing channel numbers, check whether your player supports numbered channels in favourites.
- Start-up behaviour: some players can open straight to your favourites or last channel, which feels more like traditional TV.
Watching on more than one device
Your plan's device count sets how many screens can watch at the same time. When you finish watching on one device, stop playback so the connection is free for someone else. CatchON TV plans cover one to five devices — see plans.
Keeping things smooth
- Restart your streaming device occasionally.
- Keep the player updated.
- Close the player when you are not watching.
- Check your Wi-Fi if every channel buffers.
Everyday actions at a glance
| I want to… | Do this |
|---|---|
| See what's on | Open the guide |
| Get to my channels fast | Use favourites |
| Go back to the last channel | Use last-channel/previous |
| Watch something I missed | Catch-up, where available |
| Watch a film or series | Movies / Series area |
| Find something quickly | Search |
| Keep children safe | Parental controls with a PIN |
| Free a connection | Stop playback on unused devices |
When something looks wrong
- One channel will not play: try another; if others work, tell your provider which channel and when.
- Everything buffers: check your Wi-Fi and restart the router and device.
- Guide times are wrong: adjust time zone or offset.
- "Too many connections": stop playback on another device.

Questions about using IPTV day to day
How do I add a channel to favourites in an IPTV player?
Highlight the channel and use the add-to-favourites option, often via a long press or the menu button. The exact method varies between players.
How do I watch a programme I missed on IPTV?
Use catch-up where your service offers it on that channel and your player supports it, usually by moving back in the guide.
Why does my IPTV say "too many connections"?
More devices are watching at the same time than your plan allows. Stop playback on one device to free a connection.
Can I lock channels for children in an IPTV player?
Many players offer parental controls that lock categories or channels with a PIN.
Comfortable in a week
Using IPTV every day comes down to a few habits: open the guide, use favourites, switch quickly, catch up where available, explore on demand and keep an eye on connections. Within a week, it will feel as natural as any TV you have used. For more ideas, see our guide to what an IPTV service includes.
